Hedgerow by Sian Kibblewhite
We are delighted to publish another beautiful piece of artwork by Sian Kibblewhite. Sian is an accomplished textile artist, who specialises in fabric landscapes and takes her inspiration from natural colours and textures. Here she has sprayed the Lutradur background with diluted acrylic paint and then carefully cut out the shapes of the cow parsley with a fine soldering iron. The stems have then been attached to the background using machine embroidery. (Lutradur is an ideal medium for this type of work as it is easy to colour, holds its shape and does not fray or tear). If you would like […]
Lutradur Landscape by Sian Kibblewhite
Sian Kibblewhite has been involved with textiles for many years, not only as a teacher, but also as a textile artist in her own right. She specialises in creating landscape pictures using various techniques and materials. Here we showcase an example of her work made from using layers of Lutradur. The image above shows the tree featured in her ‘Misty Morning’ landscape in closer detail. In her own words Sian describes how she makes her pictures – ‘I usually spray the Lutradur with a watered down acrylic paint to get various effects as the paint dribbles down the fabric. By spraying you can achieve various intensities of […]
Machine stitched Lutradur Leaf by Marion Barnett
This pretty little leaf is the size and shape of a birch leaf. (Admittedly, it should have serrated edges, but this one is plain). All of the stitch is free motion machine stitching using variegated cotton thread. If you would like to try making one for yourself, start with a piece of Lutradur; this is Lutradur 70gsm which has been transfer dyed on both sides, but you could paint it if you wish using acrylic or fabric paint which has been thinned down a little. Begin by stitching the edges; if you don’t feel comfortable doing this without a pattern, trace a […]
Lutradur Lace for an Easter Bonnet?
Marion Barnett has kindly written the following instructions for making Lutradur lace. Marion is a very well known and respected textile artist and was one of the very first to work with Lutradur and Evolon, when we introduced these fabrics to the market some years ago. Making Lutradur Lace by Marion Barnett One of the great things about Lutradur is that, although it looks and feels delicate, it is, in fact, remarkably strong. That makes it a wonderful base for all sorts of stitch techniques. I often use it to make a form of embroidered lace; the heavier the weight, the stiffer the lace will […]
An Easter Bouquet using Evolon and Lutradur
Daffodils always seem to herald the start of Spring and are a source of joy and colour at Easter. Our flowers were made using transfer painted Evolon attached to green garden sticks. The leaves are made from strips of Lutradur 100gsm, which has also been transfer painted. We made these over a year ago using fluted pastry cutters as templates and they still look just as bright and cheerful! You can see our range of Evolon and Lutradur by visiting our online shop.
Artwork using Black Lutradur by Heather Tilley
We are delighted to feature three new pieces of work by textile artist, Heather Tilley. Heather has contributed images to our blog before, but this time she has used black Lutradur as her main fabric. The image above is entitled ‘Memories of Moscow’ and is of an Orthodox Church with reflections of the sunset on some of the windows and cupolas. The black Lutradur provides the perfect silhouette to give both contrast and a sense of atmosphere against the colourful sky, The picture below is one of Heather’s earlier attempts, featuring simple hand stitching on the buildings and based on one of her trips abroad. Mother’s Day – Lutradur Bows to Enhance your Gift
Gift wrap bows are so easy to make out of Lutradur, so why not give your gift that personal touch? Lutradur can be coloured with transfer paint to the shade and intensity of your choice and then, best of all, it holds its shape to allow for maximum creativity and impact. Here are just three examples of bows made from Lutradur 30gms and coloured to complement the flowers, plants and gift wrap. To see our entire range of Lutradur please visit our online shop.
Embroidered Lampshade by Jackie Cawthray
Jackie Cawthray, one of our customers who lives in France, used Lutradur 70gsm to make this delightful lampshade. First, she painted the Lutradur with two thin layers of acrylic paint (which had been diluted so that the colours blended) and then embroidered the fabric from the reverse side, using a variegated cotton knitting yarn. Jackie then cut away the top and burnt the Lutradur with a hot air gun to give the lampshade its distinctive finish. After attaching a few beads, the Lutradur was glued together to form […]
‘Memory’ A Piece by Textile Artist Heather Tilley
This intricate piece of textile art was sent into us by the artist Heather Tilley. It is approximately 33cms x 25cms and Heather tells us it formed part of a screen, a final piece, for the City and Guilds Diploma. The theme was ‘Memory’ and represents time spent playing solo during lunch breaks in the staff room. It was created by printing photographs and painting rectangles on to Lutradur 70gms, which were then embellished with machine stitching in blue, red and yellow thread. The decorative border was formed by melting a series of small random holes around the edge with a soldering iron. To see […]
Hearts and Flowers for Valentine’s Day
Red roses made from transfer painted Evolon . . . . The corrugated card, soft Evolon rose and thin green wire combine to give this Valentine card lots of textural interest. A few roses and a scattering of green leaves (all made from transfer painted Evolon) add a romantic touch to our table centrepiece. Messages of love in Lutradur . . . Bunting is always a great way of celebrating any occasion and is really quick and easy to make using Lutradur, as it does not tear or fray. We’ve used Lutradur 100gms […]
