Evolon

Evolon is a totally new and unique material from the manufacturers of Lutradur, it is a white microfilament fabric which is extremely strong, but soft like traditional fabric.

Due to its structure, it is ideal to use as a base cloth for any kind of stitch, it is robust, doesn’t fray and quilts beautifully, giving an interesting textural effect. It is rather similar to a very short piled velvet, but much easier to work with.  It can be burned with a soldering iron- to give the impression of broderie anglaise or cut work.

Like Lutradur it is possible to use just about any type of paint to colour Evolon, and is suitable for use with a wide range of dyes, and dyeing processes.

Halloween Ideas – Evolon Ghosts

by Ruth Morgan | October 18, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

Ghostly goings on . . . Here at Spunart, we’ve been busy making a mobile for Halloween using a pair of wire coat hangers for the frame. We began by designing a cardboard template and cutting out two pieces of Evolon per ghost, which we machine stitched together leaving the bottom section completely open. A small amount of wadding was then put inside each one to give them a lovely soft padded shape. We thought it would be rather fun if our ghosts glowed in the dark, so we painted them with luminous paint, before using a black biro to draw on their eyebrows and fingers. Finally, […]

World Cup Semi-Final – Football Fever!

by Ruth Morgan | July 11, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

With only hours to go before England play in the Semi-Final, the nation is poised in readiness to cheer and support Gareth Southgate and his team . . . Amid the growing excitement, an increasing number of England flags can be seen fluttering from car windows and draped across walls as the country unites to rally behind the boys. Here at Spunart we made a few flags, which were really easy to put together using Evolon. All we had to do was cut some rectangular shapes and then decorate with strips of Evolon (which we coloured with red dye) to form the St. George’s cross, which can either […]

Car Cleaning Mit made from Evolon Soft

by Ruth Morgan | June 11, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

We’re hoping this gift idea will appeal to the man who likes to keep his car looking pristine! Our over-sized mit is made of Evolon Soft, an absorbent lint-free material, which is ideal for cleaning and polishing. We’ve made this one in our guy’s favourite football team colours and added his initials in a number plate style font for a personalised touch. To make –   Simply colour some Evolon Soft using transfer paint and cut out four mitten shaped pieces (two left and two right). Cut several strips, approximately 2″ wide to suit the length of the glove. Fold the strips […]

The Royal Wedding and Evolon – a Perfect Match!

by Ruth Morgan | May 16, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

It’s The BIG DAY this Saturday and everyone can join in with the celebrations.   Here at Spunart we’re putting the flags out with some eye-catching bunting made from Evolon. As Evolon is white, we only had to colour the blue and red triangles, before sewing them on to a string of blue ribbon. As Evolon does not fray, the individual pieces keep their neat and tidy appearance, with no loose threads to worry about or spoil the effect.   We hope Harry and Meghan enjoy their wedding day and wish them every future happiness.

St George’s Day – Child’s Costume in Evolon

by Ruth Morgan | April 20, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

We’ve all heard of a knight in shining armour, but our little model is wearing a tunic made from Evolon! Using one of his t-shirts as a guide, we cut a front and back panel out of a metre piece of Evolon and machine stitched them together at the shoulders. We made a pattern for the cross and then cut out the shape from the remaining Evolon before painting it red with acrylic paint. The cross was machine stitched to the front of the tunic (although we could have attached it by using a self adhesive medium, such as Bondaweb). We left the sides open, but […]

Easter Bunny Ears made with Evolon

by Ruth Morgan | March 23, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

This little bundle of joy is modelling a pair of Evolon bunny ears attached to his own snug fitting white hat.                   Each ear is made from two pieces of Evolon sewn together, with a smaller, dyed layer machine stitched to the front. The inner ear sections were coloured by soaking the Evolon in warm water infused with a tea bag, which produced a lovely soft shade of fawn. If required, stiffener or card can be inserted inside the ears for extra support. Happy Easter to all our customers!

Little Women made with Evolon Soft

by Ruth Morgan | March 7, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

To make our little maids – 1. Cut keyhole shape pieces out of Evolon Soft (two per doll). 2. Colour the cut pieces with transfer paint to give the dolls their colourful dresses. (For instructions on how to do this, please see our video) 3. To add a design, paint a pattern using transfer paints on to a piece of paper and leave to dry. 4. Overprint the base colour with this design by using a warm iron (same method as for the base colour). 5. Sew on tiny beads for the eyes, a stitch or two for the mouth and a special button for a bag. […]

Valentine Cards with Evolon Soft

by Ruth Morgan | February 12, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

Evolon is ideal for colouring using a Marbling Kit We were so delighted with the results we achieved colouring Evolon with our Marbling Kit from Marbling Art Originals Ltd. (please see our previous blog for details), we decided to make some cards for Valentine’s Day. As Evolon is a very smooth and uniform fabric, the paint takes to it beautifully and provides superb definition of colour and clarity of design, even with the most intricate patterns. We think its even better than painting on to a traditional (woven) material. Evolon for Card Making For the card pictured below, we cut two heart shaped pieces of our […]

Marbling with Evolon

by Ruth Morgan | February 5, 2018 | Posted in Evolon

Marbling Kit Last year we came across this ingenious marbling kit being demonstrated at the Festival of Quilts and were amazed at the fantastic patterns and colours that could be achieved. We ordered a set from Marble Art Originals Ltd (www.marbling4fun.net) and carefully followed the enclosed instructions. (We also found the three videos on their website particularly helpful!). Our first attempts were all done on Evolon and, as you can see, the contrast between the unpainted portions and the coloured sections is quite dramatic. Here are some close-ups . . . We are looking forward to trying marbling on our other fabrics, […]
